about

Performed, recorded, edited, and produced alone by viol virtuoso Josh Lee in the opening days of the COVID-19 quarantine, “O Say Deere Life” by 17th century composer John Ward is a musical depiction of the longing felt when denied a kiss. Originally written for either “Viols or Voyces,” Lee leans on the madrigal’s text to paint a musical portrait of a suitor warmly cajoling his love for a kiss, describing her lips as “twin born berries” and “sweet cherries.” Though the work ends before we discover the fate of the narrator and his desires, the 400 year old depiction of craving and denial are familiar despite the centuries that separate us.
