about

Josh Lee performs an Allemand by Nicolas Hotman, live and unedited.

This piece is taken from an anonymous manuscript from the area around Berlin, dating to 1674. A mishmash of music with works from France, Germany, Sweden, Poland, and possibly England represented, Hotman's inclusion is no mistake since he and his contemporary, Dubuisson, elevated the viol to an instrument of courtly virtuosity in mid-17th century France. For me this allemand is full of swagger and pomp, a processional dance tailor made for the entry of costumed revelers. This dance in particular has become a favorite of mine since first recording it as a test for Unaccompanied Vol. 2 (appearing on the single "Two Allemands"), and has since become a favorite work for me to open a concert.
