Josh Lee took on one of his long time favorite works, Thomas Lupo’s Fantasia for Three Bass Viols, when he found himself working totally alone in the studio during the opening weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic. The combination of three bass viols playing in tight imitation of one another was highly experimental in Elizabethan England, and Lupo pushes the players to virtuosic heights not seen in previous works for bass viol. Performed solely by Lee in its entirety, the work is kaleidoscopic in its moods, effortlessly transitioning from contemplative, to pleading, to a near-frenzy by its close, underscoring the enduring genius of this now forgotten master composer.
